Urban Development Surveys

As part of its efforts towards urban revitalization, the City of Osaka is putting energy into the development of various attractive features. Based on this policy, we are working with the city, conducting various studies on projects such as the development of the Nishi-Umeda area near Osaka Station and the planning of pedestrian traffic routes accompanying development of the area surrounding Osaka Station.

Urban Landscape-Related Surveys

An important theme in the advance toward urban revitalization is the creation of an urban landscape that has charm and allure. Aiming to promote urban landscape elements that reflect the personality of Osaka and are loved by its citizens, such as reviving the idea of Osaka as the water capital, we are working with the City of Osaka on the following research activities:

  • Preparing documents for discussion at the Osaka Urban Landscape Committee regarding urban landscape issues related to the Landscape Law enacted in June 2004, and studying the best architectural planning policy for formulating urban landscape infrastructure guidelines for targeted areas.
  • Surveying current status and needs for the riverbanks in the Nakanoshima area, including citizens' opinions on the utilization of downtown river areas, in light of the "Osaka, the Water Metropolis Revival Plan" formulated in March 2003.
  • Studying designated urban landscape projects that characterize local urban landscape elements loved by citizens, as part of an urban landscape creation enlightenment campaign conducted in 2004.

Maintenance of Sculptures on Midosuji Boulevard

Since 1992, Osaka City has promoted the placement of sculptures, donated by the companies along Midosuji Boulevard, under the theme of "Celebrating Humanity". We maintain and preserve these sculptures (numbering 27 at present).

Improvement for Visitor-Friendly Signs

We have been upgrading the Osaka sign system to be visitor-friendly. We created local pictograms for 19 tourist attractions (Osaka Castle, Kaiyukan Aquarium, etc.) in 1998 for use on guide maps and sighboards. We are also improving the guide maps and signage of underground areas. For example, at the Umeda Underground Area, we upgrade and maintain map-based signage in cooperation with Osaka City, road administrators, railway companies and underground shopping street associations. At the Namba Underground Area, we conducted a study on guidance system for passenger transfer, and at the Dojima Underground Area, we upgraded the signage to coincide with refurbishment of the underground shopping street.
