Survey and Research on Promotion of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems)

In October 2000, the City of Osaka formulated the Osaka ITS Promotion Plan 2000 as a guideline for constructing and promoting a new urban transportation system that uses ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), a high-speed road traffic information system.

Based on this plan, we collaborated with the City of Osaka, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and other agencies to carry out a social experiment (in FY2000 and 2001) aimed at supporting the movement of pedestrians in the Umeda underground shopping center using means such as PDA (personal digital assistance) terminals. We also studied ways of providing visitors with directions that will enable them to get to places of interest and other destinations smoothly and efficiently (FY2002 and 2003).

Along with growing urban development, a key topic for the future is how to raise the functionality of traffic nodes where many modes of transportation come together. This will require further promotion of ITS, which will support the smooth movement of motor vehicles and pedestrians. We have formed alliances with various groups, such as academic experts, private companies, and related government agencies, as we conduct surveys and research on the promotion of ITS.
