Survey for Basic Plan Based on the Transportation Accessibility Improvement Law

With the implementation of the Law for Promoting Easily Accessible Public Transportation Infrastructure for the Aged and the Disabled (enforced in November 2000, the Transportation Accessibility Improvement Law for short), Osaka City has been striving to formulate basic plans with the cooperation of organizations of senior citizens and persons with disabilities, railway companies, road administrators, public safety commission and scholars. By March 2004, the city formulated basic plans for 15 areas, including Osaka's three major terminals--Umeda, Namba and Tennoji-Abeno--and it is doing the same for 5 other areas, including the Nishikujo area.

In order to formulate basic plans, we have conducted on-the-spot surveys with the participation of senior citizens, persons with disabilities and local residents. We will continue to confer and coordinate with related agencies for the early implementation of these plans.
